As part of I-4 Beyond the Ultimate, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is making improvements at the I-4 and Sand Lake Road interchange.
Project improvements include:
- Reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from the end of the I-4 Ultimate project just west of Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) to west of Sand Lake Road.
-
Reconstructing the Sand Lake Road interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) with a loop ramp to Turkey Lake Road.
- The initial construction phase DDI opened to motorists in March 2024, and the new loop ramp system to Turkey Lake Road opened in May 2026.
- Constructing two westbound, barrier-separated express lanes from west of the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road to west of Sand Lake Road. These will transition to a single westbound, buffer-separated express lane from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This express lane will be constructed in three separate projects with the finished lane extending from west of its current endpoint to west of S.R. 536.
FDOT let this project as a design-build contract. The final configuration of the interchange will be very similar to what is shown in the documents and videos below, but small refinements are anticipated. Construction on this project began in 2023 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2027.
