Sound Wall Construction Begins Along I-4 North of E.E. Williamson Road

Crews have begun construction on a new sound barrier between Pine Bay Drive and Interstate 4 (I-4) in Seminole County.

The barrier will extend more than a quarter of a mile north from the I-4 eastbound rest area.

Completion of the sound barrier could take about two to three months. The area in which the barrier will be built has already been cleared of vegetation.

To construct the sound barrier, crews will drill holes in the ground and set posts. Precast concrete panels will then be installed between the posts. This build method does not require pile driving, which typically creates noise and vibration to nearby properties.

Installing a barrier east of the eastbound I-4 travel lanes between E.E. Williamson Road and Lake Mary Boulevard will help block the direct travel of sound waves to nearby residences. The Florida Department of Transportation will be adding an eastbound I-4 auxiliary lane from the I-4 Ultimate project to west of Lake Mary Boulevard.

Modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving through the work zone.
