Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing overnight closures along Interstate 4 (I-4) at the Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) and S.R. 528 (Beachline Expressway) interchanges from Tuesday, May 6, through Thursday, May 8, to prepare for a traffic shift. The closures will begin as early as 10 p.m. each night and are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning, with the last closure opening on the morning of Friday, May 9.
On the nights of Tuesday, May 6, through Thursday, May 8, motorists can expect the following overnight closures:
- All lanes of eastbound I-4 underneath S.R. 528
- The westbound I-4 exit ramp to S.R. 528 (Exit 72)
- The westbound I-4 entrance and exit ramps for Sand Lake Road (Exit 74A)
The closures are necessary to prepare for a traffic shift. The operation at the I-4 and S.R. 528 interchange is a critical step in the project to widen the I-4 westbound exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528 from one to two lanes, improving capacity and traffic flow at this busy interchange.
The work at the I-4 and Sand Lake Road interchange is part of a larger operation that will bring the westbound I-4 exit ramp closer to the overpass to provide relief to the surrounding intersections by creating greater distance between them and the I-4 entrance and exit ramps.
During the overnight closures, motorists traveling east on I-4 will be directed to take Exit 72 to eastbound S.R. 528, then use Exit 1 to access northbound International Drive before taking an immediate right turn onto the loop ramp to westbound S.R. 528. From there, motorists can proceed to eastbound I-4.
Motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access eastbound S.R. 528 will exit early at Exit 75B onto southbound Kirkman Road and proceed to the Sand Lake Road ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto eastbound Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal. From there, motorists will turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway, proceeding to S.R. 528. See the first attached map for detailed detour information.
Motorists traveling on westbound I-4 who wish to access Sand Lake Road should take Exit 74B onto northbound Adventure Way. From there, motorists who want to access Sand Lake Road west of I-4 will turn left onto westbound Hollywood Way, then turn left again onto southbound Turkey Lake Road and proceed to Sand Lake Road.
From northbound Adventure Way, motorists who wish to access Sand Lake Road east of I-4 should turn right onto eastbound Hollywood Way, then turn right again onto southbound Universal Boulevard and proceed to Sand Lake Road.
Motorists on Sand Lake Road who wish to access westbound I-4 should travel north on Turkey Lake Road and turn right onto eastbound Hollywood Way. Drivers will then turn right onto Adventure Way and proceed south to the westbound I-4 entrance ramp. See the second attached map for detailed detour information.
Motorists should follow all posted signs and use extra caution while driving through active construction zones. Remember to always be alert while riding or driving.
Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
This project will widen the westbound I-4 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528 from one lane to two lanes, improving capacity and traffic flow.
The project began in January 2024 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2026.
