Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is implementing overnight closures along Interstate 4 (I-4) between the Kirkman Road (State Road (S.R.) 435) and S.R. 528 (Beachline Expressway) interchanges beginning Sunday, May 4, through the morning of Friday, May 9. The closures will begin as early as 10 p.m. each night and are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning.
Nightly from Sunday, May 4, through Tuesday, May 6, all westbound lanes and ramps of I-4 from Kirkman Road to west of S.R. 528 will be closed, except for the westbound I-4 entrance ramp from westbound S.R. 528 and the westbound I-4 exit ramp to Kirkman Road.
On the nights of Wednesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 8, all lanes of eastbound I-4 underneath S.R. 528 will be closed overnight. The westbound I-4 exit ramp to S.R. 528, Exit 72, will also be closed on both nights of this operation.
These closures are necessary to prepare for a traffic shift onto the new ramp lane. The operation is a critical step in the project to widen the I-4 westbound exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528 from one to two lanes, improving capacity and traffic flow at this busy interchange.
During the May 4 through 6 overnight closures, motorists traveling west on I-4 will exit at Exit 75B to southbound Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) and proceed to the Sand Lake Road (S.R. 482) ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto eastbound Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal, proceeding to John Young Parkway (S.R. 423). Motorists will then turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway, proceeding to S.R. 528. From there, drivers who wish to return to I-4 will continue west on S.R. 528 and take the entrance ramp on the left to access westbound I-4.
Motorists traveling east on Sand Lake Road who wish to access westbound I-4 will turn right onto southbound Turkey Lake Road and proceed to Central Florida Parkway. From there, motorists will turn left onto eastbound Central Florida Parkway and take the first right onto the westbound I-4 entrance ramp. See the attached map for detailed detour information.
During the May 7 and 8 overnight closures, motorists traveling east on I-4 will be directed to take Exit 72 to eastbound S.R. 528, then use Exit 1 to access northbound International Drive before taking an immediate right turn onto the loop ramp to westbound S.R. 528. From there, motorists can proceed to eastbound I-4.
Motorists traveling west on I-4 who wish to access eastbound S.R. 528 will exit early, at Exit 75B, to southbound Kirkman Road and proceed to the Sand Lake Road ramp, staying in the left lane and turning left onto eastbound Sand Lake Road at the traffic signal. From there, motorists will turn right onto southbound John Young Parkway, proceeding to S.R. 528. See the attached map for detailed detour information.
Motorists should follow all posted signs and use extra caution while driving through active construction zones. Remember to always be alert while riding or driving.
Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
This project will widen the westbound I-4 exit ramp to eastbound S.R. 528 from one lane to two lanes, improving capacity and traffic flow.
The project began in January 2024 and is anticipated to reach completion in 2026.
