New Diverging Diamond Interchange Opening at I-4 and Daryl Carter Parkway July 19

Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will open three new ramps directly connecting Daryl Carter Parkway to Interstate 4 (I-4), transforming the existing overpass into I-4’s newest interchange. The ramps are scheduled to open early Saturday morning, July 19.

This spring, the Daryl Carter Parkway overpass was converted to a diverging diamond traffic pattern in preparation for this new interchange. On July 19, FDOT will open eastbound and westbound I-4 exit ramps to Daryl Carter Parkway at new Exit 70, as well as an eastbound I-4 entrance ramp from Daryl Carter Parkway. A westbound I-4 entrance ramp will be constructed in the future.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

The innovative diverging diamond interchange (DDI) design briefly moves traffic on Daryl Carter Parkway to the left side of the roadway at a traffic signal, then back to the right side at a second signal, eliminating left turns across oncoming traffic. Compared to a conventional interchange, a DDI can move nearly twice the number of vehicles in the same amount of time and can cut crash risks in half, providing enhanced safety and traffic efficiency.

As drivers adjust to the new traffic pattern, they should stay alert, drive with caution, and follow all signals and posted signage.

Construction on the project began in fall 2022 and is expected to be fully completed in summer 2025.
