Concrete Pours Over Central Florida Parkway
Crews recently completed concrete deck pours in the median of Interstate 4 (I-4) over Central Florida Parkway as part of the ongoing improvement project at I-4 and Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482).
A concrete deck is a large slab that forms the driving surface of a bridge. It supports vehicles and distributes their weight to the beams and piers below. For the bridge deck pours over Central Florida Parkway, crews poured approximately 60 cubic yards of concrete for each deck. In comparison, the pours over Sand Lake Road required about 400 cubic yards of concrete per deck.
To safely perform this work, crews implemented temporary safety diversions of both directions of Central Florida Parkway under I-4 to direct traffic away from the underpass and protect workers and motorists.
The first deck pour was completed on May 8 and the second was completed on May 14. Following each pour, the concrete must cure for several days to reach the required strength before additional construction activities can continue.
To stay informed about future safety diversions and traffic shifts, motorists are encouraged to sign up for construction alerts at I4Beyond.com/Signup.
