Motorists are advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will implement overnight closures of the eastbound Interstate 4 (I-4) entrance ramp from Sand Lake Road (State Road (S.R.) 482) from Tuesday, February 17 to Thursday, February 19, for drainage installation.
The ramp closures are scheduled to begin as early as 10 p.m. each night and are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning, with the final closure opening the morning of Friday, February 20.
This work is part of the ongoing improvement project to reconstruct the I-4 and Sand Lake Road interchange into a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) and extend I-4 Express.
Detour Information
- During the ramp closure, motorists on Sand Lake Road east of I-4 who wish to access eastbound I-4 should head north on Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) and proceed to the eastbound I-4 entrance ramp.
- Motorists on Sand Lake Road west of I-4 can head north on Turkey Lake Road, turn right onto eastbound Hollywood Way, then turn right onto southbound Universal Boulevard to access eastbound I-4.
FDOT advises motorists to follow all posted detour signs. Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
This project is reconfiguring and extending ramps at the interchange and improving capacity on Sand Lake Road and Turkey Lake Road. A new loop ramp will replace the existing left turns from westbound Sand Lake Road to southbound Turkey Lake Road. Upon completion, motorists will also be able to bypass Sand Lake Road and exit I-4 directly to Turkey Lake Road on the new ramp system.
This project includes reconstructing the I-4 general use lanes from the end of the I-4 Ultimate project near Kirkman Road to west of Sand Lake Road. Crews are constructing two barrier-separated westbound I-4 Express lanes from the existing express lanes near Kirkman Road to west of Sand Lake Road. These lanes will transition to a single, buffer-separated westbound express lane from west of Sand Lake Road and tie in just west of Central Florida Parkway. This I-4 Express extension will be constructed in three separate projects, with the finished lane stretching from west of Sand Lake Road to west of S.R. 536.
Construction on the project began in spring 2023 and is expected to be fully completed in 2027.
