Remember Safe Driving Tips for New I-4 Work Zone in Osceola County

Work to improve Interstate 4 (I-4) between County Road (C.R.) 532 and State Road (S.R.) 429 is underway.

The project began in November to add eastbound and westbound I-4 auxiliary lanes, one in each direction, between the two interchanges, as well as an auxiliary lane on northbound S.R. 429 between I-4 and Sinclair Road.

Motorists in the area do need to be aware the I-4 work zone for this project stretches about 5 miles from the Polk/Osceola County line to west of S.R. 417. Milling and resurfacing of all the I-4 lanes in this area, as well as on S.R. 429 between I-4 and Sinclair Road, will create a smoother roadway and extend the life of the pavement.

Milling and resurfacing work occurs mostly at night. Motorists should expect nightly lane closures in this area on Sunday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

To protect construction workers and all road users, follow these tips for traveling safely through the work zones:

  • Watch for vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.
  • Be aware of workers while driving through an active work zone.
  • Slow down to the posted speed limit.
  • Save lives by avoiding distractions and always driving sober.

I-4 Beyond the Ultimate Improvements Accelerate in 2021

It’s been a busy 2021 calendar year for the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate program. Several improvement projects in Seminole County completed just as new work began in Osceola County.

May 2021

Crews completed milling and resurfacing of westbound I-4 travel lanes from U.S. 17-92 to State Road (S.R.) 46 and from County Road (C.R.) 46A to Lake Mary Boulevard, along with the interchange ramps at Lake Mary Boulevard, C.R. 46A, S.R. 46, and U.S. 17-92. The milling and resurfacing project began in summer 2020.

June 2021

Reconstruction of the E.E. Williamson Road overpass wrapped up. The new overpass includes 6-foot-wide bicycle lanes on the outside of both traffic lanes, a 6-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side, and a 10-foot-wide trail on the north side, which improves access to the Seminole Wekiva Trail. In addition, a new eastbound I-4 auxiliary lane from the I-4 Ultimate project to Lake Mary Boulevard — which began construction in 2019 — was completed and opened for use.

July 2021

Work on the I-4 and C.R. 532 interchange near ChampionsGate is now underway. Construction of a new, innovative diverging diamond interchange will improve traffic flow through the area. Bike lanes and sidewalks along C.R. 532 will also improve cyclist and pedestrian connectivity and safety at the interchange. The work is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2022.

November 2021

In conjunction with the work on C.R. 532, construction on I-4 began in Osceola County. The improvements include adding an eastbound and a westbound I-4 auxiliary lane between the ramps of S.R. 429 and C.R. 532, and a new auxiliary lane on northbound S.R. 429 between I-4 and Sinclair Road. The project also includes milling and resurfacing along eastbound and westbound I-4 from the Polk/Osceola County line to west of S.R. 417, and milling and resurfacing along S.R. 429 between I-4 and Sinclair Road. Construction is anticipated to be completed by fall 2023.

2022 will be another important year, with new projects coming online for I-4 improvements in south Orange County. Sign up for the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate newsletter to learn about construction updates and project news.

I-4 Express Website Now Available

Managed lanes, known locally as I-4 Express, will open on Interstate 4 (I-4) in early 2022. To help motorists make the most of this new travel option, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has launched a new website, i4express.com.

I-4 Express is a limited-access toll road within the interstate. Once open, I-4 Express will offer two tolled lanes in each direction in the center of I-4, spanning all 21 miles of the I-4 Ultimate corridor from west of Kirkman Road (S.R. 435) to east of S.R. 434.

I-4 Express gives drivers another choice to avoid congestion and reduce stress. The pricing for tolls is not a fixed rate and will vary based on demand for access to I-4 Express. Pricing is adjusted based on traffic volumes in I-4 Express to manage congestion. Since tolls are collected electronically, drivers must have a SunPass or other Florida-accepted transponder such as E-PASS or Peach Pass.

The new website has all the information you need to use I-4 Express. For how-to videos, frequently asked questions, a complete list of accepted transponders, an interactive trip planning tool, and more, be sure to visit i4express.com.
