Take a Virtual Tour of the Future I-4 Interchanges at Sand Lake Road and Daryl Carter Parkway

As plans for improvements to the Interstate 4 (I-4) interchange at Sand Lake Road (State Road 482) and the new I-4 interchange at Daryl Carter Parkway move forward, the public can follow along by viewing a virtual tour of the designs at vtour.123bim.com/AAEP.

The tour allows viewers to interact with a 3-D model of the planned improvements from several different angles, thereby providing a complete picture of what’s to come.

The I-4 and Sand Lake Road project would see the interchange reconfigured into a diverging diamond, which would decrease the number of conflict points, increasing the overall safety of the interchange. Diverging diamond interchanges also eliminate the need for left turns across oncoming traffic. They also reduce the number of traffic light phases, allowing more cars to travel through the interchange.

Unlike a traditional diverging diamond configuration, the Sand Lake Road interchange will include a loop access ramp from westbound Sand Lake Road to Turkey Lake Road. In addition, the reconfiguration will have a westbound I-4 exit ramp that separates into two ramps, one to Sand Lake Road and one to Turkey Lake Road, and it will add a third lane on northbound Turkey Lake Road from the new ramp to south of Sand Lake Road.

Construction on the project is anticipated to begin late 2021 or early 2022. It will take approximately three years to complete.

Daryl Carter Parkway crosses over I-4 between Central Florida Parkway and State Road 535, Apopka Vineland Road. It also connects Palm Parkway with the south part of International Drive. But there is currently no access to I-4.

The future construction project, also anticipated to begin in late 2021 or early 2022, will convert Daryl Carter Parkway into a diverging diamond interchange with new ramps to and from eastbound I-4 and an exit ramp from westbound I-4. There will be no access from Daryl Carter Parkway to westbound I-4 at this time. This configuration is an interim step, with the full interchange being completed with a future project.

First Nighttime Ramp Closures Underway in Seminole County for I-4 Beyond the Ultimate Project

The first of a series of nightly ramp closures at the Interstate 4 (I‑4) and U.S. 17‑92 interchange at the Seminole-Volusia county line is underway.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently closed the eastbound I‑4 entrance ramp from U.S. 17-92 the nights of October 13 through October 16 to update the guardrails along the shoulder of the ramp. Crews worked overnight to remove the old guardrail along a section of the ramp and install the new guardrail.

The eastbound I‑4 exit ramp to U.S. 17‑92 also will receive updated guardrails.

To allow crews space to work, the exit ramp to U.S. 17-92 will be closing nightly at 11 p.m. from Monday, October 21, through Thursday, October 24, with the ramp reopening each morning by 6 a.m.

Motorists looking to exit eastbound I-4 to U.S. 17-92 will need to take exit 101C, turn right onto State Road (S.R.) 46 and turn left onto Monroe Road (U.S. 17-92).

View or download a detailed detour map for the eastbound I-4 exit ramp to U.S. 17-92 closure at fdot.tips/1792Exit.

The new guardrails at the I‑4 and U.S. 17‑92 interchange are part of the milling and resurfacing projects of the eastbound I‑4 travel lanes between Lake Mary Boulevard and County Road (C.R.) 46A and from S.R. 46 to the Seminole-Volusia county line. The work will extend the life of the pavement.

Modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving through the work zone.

I-4 Beyond the Ultimate Project Team Attends Lake Mary Event

Community outreach specialists from I-4 Beyond the Ultimate attended a Lake Mary community event this month to share information about Interstate 4 (I‑4) construction projects in Seminole County.

The Lake Mary Police Department’s annual National Night Out event was held on October 1 in Lake Mary Central Park. Designed to strengthen the partnership between law enforcement and the community, this family-friendly event included K-9 and police demonstrations, food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, and other fun activities for all ages.

The I-4 Beyond the Ultimate team was one of many vendors at the event. The team answered resident questions about the interim I‑4 construction projects in Seminole County and invited the public to attend the informational open house at the Lake Mary Events Center on October 23.
