I-4 Beyond the Ultimate: Building a Better I-4

Construction on the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT’s) I-4 Beyond the Ultimate is underway in Orange and Osceola counties, and several projects have already been completed.

An innovative new diverging diamond interchange (DDI) is now open at Interstate 4 (I-4) and County Road (C.R.) 532 near ChampionsGate. In addition, new bike lanes and sidewalks along C.R. 532 will improve cyclist and pedestrian connectivity and safety.

Several new capacity improvements have recently concluded, including:

  • A new auxiliary lane opened summer 2023 on westbound I-4, beginning at the entrance ramp from State Road (S.R.) 429 and ending as an exit-only lane onto C.R. 532.
  • A new auxiliary lane opened in spring 2023 on eastbound I-4, beginning at the entrance ramp from C.R. 532 and ending as an exit-only lane onto S.R. 429.
  • Milling and resurfacing of S.R. 429 between I-4 and Sinclair Road concluded in late 2023.
  • A new auxiliary lane opened in summer 2023 on northbound S.R. 429 to Sinclair Road.

The reconstruction of the Daryl Carter Parkway overpass into a DDI has begun. The existing overpass, which spans I-4 between Central Florida Parkway and S.R. 535, will be converted into a partial interchange with three new ramps: exit ramps from eastbound and westbound I-4 and an entrance ramp to eastbound I-4.

The Sand Lake Road project’s construction phase DDI opened in March 2024. This is part of an ongoing project to improve safety and reduce congestion in the area. Implementing the Sand Lake Road DDI during the project’s construction phase gives crews space to work in the median of Sand Lake Road to complete overhead bridge work, reconstruct the I-4 general use lanes, and extend I-4 Express over Sand Lake Road. The I-4 and Sand Lake Road interchange will continue to undergo improvements until its anticipated completion in 2027.

The reconstruction of the E.E. Williamson Road overpass and construction of a new eastbound I-4 auxiliary lane from the east end of the I-4 Ultimate Project to Lake Mary Boulevard, which began in summer 2019, has been completed. Milling and resurfacing work has also been completed on both directions of I-4 in Seminole County.

Motorists should practice safe driving habits, such as paying attention to the road and their surroundings in the work zone. Sign up for personalized text or email alerts for advance notification of construction impacts.
